Dubai Joins SDG Cities Initiative

Date:

MIDDLEEASTTYCOON NEWS DESK:Dubai has officially signed a contribution agreement to join the SDG Cities Global Initiative under the United Nations Human Settlements Programme. This move, overseen by Digital Dubai, positions the emirate as a key player in global sustainability efforts and emphasizes its commitment to the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The collaboration involves 13 local government entities, highlighting their dedication to implementing best global practices and developing innovative policies aimed at improving quality of life while preserving natural resources. Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, Director-General of Digital Dubai, noted that sustainability is integral to their strategies, aligning with the vision of Dubai’s leadership to foster a prosperous future.

Al Mansoori stated, “We are proud that Dubai is one of the first cities in the region to join this initiative, underscoring our commitment to sustainability.” He emphasized the role of digitization and technology in promoting sustainable practices and meeting global standards.

Younus Al Nasser, Chief Executive of Dubai Data & Statistics Establishment, added that integrating artificial intelligence and data-driven technologies is crucial for advancing sustainability. The collaboration aims to make significant progress across urban, economic, environmental, social, and cultural dimensions, using an urban monitoring framework to assess performance.

The initiative outlines seven key areas of focus: enhancing quality of life, improving infrastructure, promoting environmental sustainability, stimulating a green economy, fostering collaboration among stakeholders, achieving sustainability certifications, and producing Voluntary Local Reviews (VLR) reports to ensure transparency.

To support these objectives, Dubai is implementing the Dubai Urban Plan 2040, which emphasizes sustainable urban development with a human-centered approach, and the Dubai Economic and Social Agenda 33, which seeks to improve quality of life and drive comprehensive development. Additionally, Digital Dubai has launched the “Discovering the CityVerse” initiative to leverage innovation and virtual technologies in achieving the UN’s SDGs.

Through these efforts, Dubai aims to strengthen its position as a leading sustainable and innovative city on the global stage.
